Ethnocentrism

americanethnocentrism

1.Find 3 things about a different culture that you didn’t know before

1- Ethiopia uses a calendar that is about seven years behind the Gregorian calendar.September 12 marks the start of the New Year for the African country , so their new millennium began on what we consider Sept. 12, 2007.

2- Cut fingers in Indonesia: are usually eccentric followed by a tribe called “Danny” in Indonesia, as they force women to cut off parts of their fingers when  a family member died. In order to make them feel the same emotional pain that they feel it!

hhh

3- In some Indian tribes the man at the maintenance of beards greeting each other an expression of mutual respect!

2.What are some problems with ethnocentrism in the UAE?

In the UAE’s culture, people can not be seen kissing in public. It’s against the Islamic religion and the culture of the UAE. It is very different than other cultures. However, other cultures they see it a normal thing, it’s not forbidden or something.

      3. How could these problems be overcome?

The UAE culture based on Islamic law (sharia). The UAE culture is very different from other cultures. the foreign people should respect the UAE culture and don’t kiss in public. and the UAE people respect  other cultures when they travel to their countries.

Three stories

Andersen-317x482.png

Alvie Eats Soup

In this story, the worldview is Honor/Shame because the parents were so embarrassed from what will people say about their son who just eats soup and his grandmother a famous chef? Moreover, when grandmother gave food as a gift to Alvie, Alvie’s dad lied when he wrote a letter to his mother that his son loved the gift while he didn’t.Also, they want him to follow family rules. This shows Focus on establishing what will enhance or maintain power.

Robot Racers (2)

The scenario of this story explains the type of the three Colours worldview which is innocence / Guilt societies because of Tanktop cheats squeak. For example, Tanktop stolen cyber sid’s memory chip. In addition, Tanktop rests Betty Byte’s built in alarm clock to let squeaky be late from the race and brings the winner. Besides that,  Tanktop creates  a lot of problems for Squeaky. for instance, he puts nails, oil and cuts Squeaky’s telescopic arms. however, in the end, of the story, squeaky won the race which indicates that being cheat is always the loser and being honest is always winner. that is  Fairness, consistency and transparency are important

The Gruffalo

In this story, power fear is the world view because the mouse is smart so he told everyone that he’s a friend with the Gruffalo. So everyone is scared of him.

Also, he says to the Gruffalo that he is the most scariest creature in this wood. Mouse is smart and he gets power easily.

Three Colors Worldview

dd.png

My: Honor/shame: 8

Guilt/innocence: 10

Power/fear: 5

There are 5 views refers to my personality interpretation of reality, or my basic view of life:-

1. try to engage one on one before meeting in larger groups

2. Don’t blame the individual in public even when it is his/her fault.

3.Places higher value on the pursuit of group goals.

hofstedes six dimensions of culture

Summary:

The hypothesis depends on the thought that esteem can be put upon six cultural dimensions. These are power (fairness versus disparity), cooperation (versus independence), vulnerability shirking (versus instability resilience), manliness (versus gentility), fleeting introduction, and liberality (versus restriction). Hofstede assembled the greater part of his information on world cultural values through surveys conducted by IBM, a US-based innovation and counseling firm. He then proposed a scoring system using a scale from 1 to 120.
1.Power Distance (PDI)

The path of how power is divided and the scope to which the less powerful accept that power is divided unevenly.

For example, Russia has a score of 93% power distance while Ireland has a score of 28%.

2.Individualism versus Collectivism

There are two essential methods for comprehension the relationship between people in a society.

Individualism:- The main way is independence, which expresses that every individual is following up on his or her own, settling on their own decisions and everyone has a right to private life with “I” mentality.

Collectivism:- it sees the society as the essential element, they care for others, for their families and mentality country with “We” mentality.

Such as, the USA they have 25% of individualism while China and Africa West have 20%.
3.Masculinity versus Femininity

Masculinity: is the sign which confirm ambition, is a set of attributes, behaviors and roles generally connected with boys and men. It is a mix of socially-defined and biological factors.

. Femininity: is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles mostly connected with girls and women. Femininity is socially constructed.

For instance, Greece has a score of 112% in uncertainty avoidance while China has a score of 30%.

4.Uncertainty avoidance (UAI)

A country wherein outcome and situation are unknown or changeable. Moreover, doubt avoiding cultures seek to lower the possibility of such state of affairs by tough laws and rules, safety and security measures, , and on the philosophical and religious level by faith in whole Truth; ‘there must be one Truth, and we have it.’

For example, Japan has 95 percent of masculinity while Netherlands has a score of 14 percent.
5.Long-term versus short-term orientation

Long-term orientation is when you are focused on the future. You are willing to delay short-term to prepare for the future. If you have this cultural perspective, you value persistence, constancy, sparing and having the capacity to adjust.

Short-term orientation is when you are focused on the present or past and consider them more important than the future. If you have a short-term orientation, you value tradition, the current social hierarchy and satisfying your social commitments. You think more about prompt delight than long haul satisfaction.
1)Long term orientation

– persistence

– thrift

2)Short-term orientation
– personal steadiness and stability

For instance, Africa West has a sore 9% in long-term orientation. However, Japan has a score of 88%.

6.Indulgence versus Restraint

Indulgence stays for an overall population that lets respectable free joy of major and typical human pushes related to acknowledging life and having an incredible time. Constraint stays for an overall population that smothers fulfillment of necessities and controls it by strategy for strict social gauges. Confinement stays for an overall population that thrashings joy in regards to needs and controls it by technique for strict social standards.

For instance, Russia and Romania have a score of 20% in indulgence while Africa West has a score of 78%.

Focus on results :-i’m always focusing on the results because best way to reach a desired result would be to focus on that result, try to move toward it, and judge each attempt by how closely you approximate it.
strong sense family :-  I love my family so much and i like to spend time with them. each member of our family will always be there to look out for the rest and take an interest in them. In a our family,  it is OK to ask for help and support.

Direct comunication:-
I say exactly what i think and attempt to convince others that they are right. I use clear, definitive statments and i’m comfortable telling others what to do. And i always use words like “should”, “have to”.

Advertising in the UAE

1.  Religion: religion still plays a significant role in influencing social and consumer behavior, so they should avoid any advertisment that is related to religion. Not only islamic religion but any other religions as well.

2. Inappropriate pictures: they should avoid inappropriate pictures becuase it’s not allowed to use those pictures in public.

3. Leaders of the UAE: it’s allowed to use our leader’s pictures but they should use it in a appropriate way.

Culture Clash

  1. I think it’s okay because it’s very hot and they can’t focus on the meeting, their mind will be somewhere else.
  2. They should build a good relationship so they can work in a good way, and they should meet outside the office so they can communicate more and to understand each other. The American businesswoman she means by saying “yesterday!” finish your job quickly and that time makes money.
  3. It’s okay to talk about job in a dinner party, Arab countries doesn’t mind that, it’s not rude at all.
  4. The workers are Polychromic and the boss are monochromic, and it’s the right thing to put that rule because the workers also must be in time.
  5. I think she didn’t do that on purpose because they told her to send the email on february 3rd and they wrote it in this way 2/3, so she probably misunderstood it. Even i thought it was 2nd of march.
  6. I didn’t know that it’s rude because only Chinese think it’s rude so i think my Chinese colleagues should understand that i didn’t mean it.
